They summarized their learnings from using Scrum and other methods in Machine Learning projects. They showed how to combine different agile methodologies to run successful machine learning + production software projects. Very inspiring for our own projects too.

The following talk “How to Integrate Machine Learning into Serverless Workflows” delivered also some helpful insights for some of Tarent’s current projects.

In the end, a good conference with some points I took home. See you next year? I don’t know yet. We will see.

Brian Tracy Goal Setting Guide

Brian Tracy has written down a good guide for goal setting. He hasn’t added anything which is not common sense, if you have already read the basics of this topic. You can get his article for 0$ here, you just need to subscribe to the newsletter. Of course you can use trash-mail.com or so, but he is an excellent source for information about personal development and productivity. I just learned he has an app for this process too, but I haven’t tried yet.

Regarding his guide, I especially like the Rule 2: “Write it down”. Writing it down and read it regular, is a good exercise to stay focused on your goals. But even he can’t do the magic for you, the habit of self-discipline is necessary to achieve what you want.

Time Management

If you have set your goals and planned the next steps, it is natural to loose focus or get overwhelmed by the daily business. To keep focus and plan your day, I have found this comprehensive summary of “26 Time Management Hacks I Wish I’d Known at 20”. It has all the necessary tools to achieve your goals. Good luck!

One day, my friend Christoph Görn told me something about risk estimation. I think he learned it at IBM or so. It is a keep it simple stupid technique for tech projects and you get a quick result. I used it in my recent years as a technical program manager to judge my projects and it never failed. tl;dr: There are three simple criteria to assess the risk of a project in a quick & easy way. How does it work? There are three main criteria: Does it involve technology which is new to you? Does the project involve a partner/supplier/team you have no experience with? Does the project has a volume which is relatively high for you? If you can answer a question with yes, it gets an A. Next, sum the A’s: if you answer every question with yes you get a triple A project. If your project has…

It is a keep it simple stupid technique for tech projects and you get a quick result. I used it in my recent years as a technical program manager to judge my projects and it never failed.

tl;dr: There are three simple criteria to assess the risk of a project in a quick & easy way.

How does it work? There are three main criteria:

Does it involve technology which is new to you?

Does the project involve a partner/supplier/team you have no experience with?

Does the project has a volume which is relatively high for you?

If you can answer a question with yes, it gets an A. Next, sum the A’s: if you answer every question with yes you get a triple A project. If your project has just one A it is a critical project. Every additional A makes it even more riskier. If you take it the other way around, you do a project with an understood technology, with a partner you know he is capable to do it and a budget you are used to, you have a project with manageable risk.

The details about the risk assessment

Technology is always complex. Today we have a better understanding of the technology from yesterday. But it took some time to learn it, understand it. Using it gives us experience to judge if it is applicable to a certain problem and how long it will take. So it is a risk driver, because if you use unknown, not understood technology, you can’t plan it. You have a learning curve and can’t estimate accurate. Pro-Tipp: Use agile techniques like Scrum for this kind of projects.

You rarely do projects on your own. You do it with a group of people from your company (known as team), a supplier or partner. As always it plays good, if you are already in a steady state with them. But to get there it needs at least some tuning. If you have a completely new partner, you start at zero. You don’t know how they communicate, how transparent they are. Do they deliver what promised at the times negotiated? In worst case they promised you to have something and you find out, that there is nothing. Sad but true: from my experience you should never trust new partners/suppliers. If you have worked with them six months, you can start to trust them for critical projects.

Of course it is has some impact if the supplier has experience with the technology.

The question about budget is maybe not that obvious. It is not only about the risk of loss of the money. But the higher the budget, the more things you have to care about. For example, in 100k$ projects you don’t need a budget controlling like you need in 1M$ projects. So it is more or less about the skill level of the project management.

Conclusion: how can you use this risk assessment

So now we know about how to assess the risk of a project. But how to use? Does it make a PMI© like risk management superfluous? No. During the project you still need to mitigate risk in a proper manner. But before starting the project you can use it to value time plans. If you have a AAA risk, you should add appropriate buffers and so on. You should set a target date, but you shouldn’t communicate it as the release date. Maybe you should change the technology or the supplier to reduce the risk. You should add an expert, an experienced project manager. Of course you can say no to the project.

As you could see, the quick & easy risk assessment can help you to fix some variables before kicking off the project.

While 2015 is nearly gone, many people use the time to recap the year. So did I. It was a very interesting year and there a many different parts to look at: Experiences Some photos from different journeys and day trips. Sports I did 39 bike rides, which means 1.353 km and a full time of 4,5 days on the bike. Many of them with good friends. I have attended my first ever Enduro MTB race in Willingen. Crashed in training (casual over the handlebar), injured wrist and chest. Completed race, but resulted 239 of 250. Not that bad with just one hand on the handlebar and I completed my personal goal. I did 36 runs, 155km and 18 hours in total. I also did many body workouts. Maintenance of the bike required my mechanic skills and I’ve learned a lot new stuff. Business According to Remember the Milk…

Sports

I did 39 bike rides, which means 1.353 km and a full time of 4,5 days on the bike.

Business

According to Remember the Milk I completed 1.244 Tasks.

In March, during CeBIT, the product I’m working on, Cloud of Things, was announced to the public. In June, we were ready for service.

We pushed two major version updates in production and worked on more fancy stuff for 2016.

Since then we had stormy times with some service issues, but also internal re-org, technically challenging IoT projects and onboardings with customers. I learned very much about technologies like field bus systems, TCP/IP, PaaS, Docker, scalability in general.

I dipped my toes in the field of Machine Learning, especially with Apache Spark. I will continue in 2016.

I learned a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of leading a team in different modes (Scrum, type-of Kanban, freestyle).

I again learned how good it felt, if customers like your product.

I learned by experience, how hard it is to transfer from project into the line organization without any vision, leadership and guidance.

We finished merger of two subsidiaries. We moved offices to the Telekom Campus (with Starbucks inside – Woohoo).

I enjoyed developing my own leadership skills.

It was a very interesting year with ups and downs, but for me personal, it was a very successful year as I was very happy and had plenty of new experiences!

Happy New Year!

David Fullerton, StackExchange, on Why We (Still) Believe in Private Offices. A topic I have to fight with too this year. While I believe in the advantages of private space too, I think (Scrum) teams work very well in team rooms. It fosters teamwork. A good workspace would allow easily change of the walls on the floor plan. A horror for german fire safety bureaucracy
